Postage Novelties, Le Rire

This delightful page from the archives of French satirical illustration presents Albert Robida's wickedly inventive "Catalogue of the Latest Novelties" in imaginary postage stamps. Each miniature composition skewers a nation's self-image with characteristic Belle Époque wit: Belgium's lion refuses to deliver on Sundays, Great Britain's Queen Victoria rides a swan over her "Salt Water Empire," and Uncle Sam discovers Europe for American exports. Robida, one of the most imaginative illustrators of his era, brings his signature blend of detailed draftsmanship and sharp social commentary to this survey of colonial ambitions and national vanities. From the French rooster guarding against omelettes to the Ottoman Sultan attempting reforms on his subjects, each stamp offers a complete satirical vignette. A remarkable document of turn-of-century humor and international relations, this piece transforms the mundane postage stamp into a vehicle for sophisticated political satire. An outstanding example of French magazine illustration at its most clever and visually engaging. Size: 11.25" x 8.5" Artist: Albert Robida Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear.
