Le Geste d'Edmond opens with Madagascar ginger's fresh, bright spice, complemented by warming cinnamon and aromatic clove. These rich spices set the stage for the heart of Le Geste d'Edmond - pure Bourbon vanilla. The vanilla unfolds slowly, revealing its full depth and complexity layer by layer, from sweet to woody notes, all delicately spiced. With Le Geste d'Edmond, Eight & Bob celebrates both people and place - testament to vanilla's complex history, and a deeply moving tribute to Edmond Albius's botanical brilliance. The Story Originally cultivated by the Totonac people in Mexico's Veracruz region, vanilla thrived exclusively where its natural pollinators, a particular species of bee, lived. This precious orchid captured European high society's imagination, yet its cultivation remained a challenge until 1841 when Edmond Albius, a 12-year-old enslaved on the island plantations of Réunion (then Bourbon), revolutionized its cultivation worldwide. A prodigy in botany, he ingeniously developed a simple but effective technique of using a small stick to transfer pollen from the male to female parts of the vanilla flower. Edmond's hand-pollination technique would go on to transform vanilla cultivation forever. Perfumer Albert Fouquet Notes ginger, cinnamon, clove, vanilla FYI Vanilla's legacy is inseparable from histories of colonialism and appropriation - from the Totonac people's botanical knowledge appropriated through colonization, to today's vanilla trade which continues to raise questions about environmental sustainability and ethical practices. As creators and consumers, we have a responsibility to acknowledge this history and actively support ethical practices. While acknowledging these issues is an important first step, more work is needed to realize a truly ethical vanilla trade.
