Tiki Lava Flow Copperleaf

Tiki Lava Flow Copperleaf (Acalypha wilkesiana 'Tiki Lava Flow')Tiki Lava Flow Copperleaf is a warm-climate foliage shrub prized for saturated, lava-toned leaves that bring instant drama to beds and containers. The deep burgundy to red coloration reads as bold from a distance and adds contrast that makes nearby greens and flowers look sharper. It grows quickly into a full, leafy mound, giving you fast color coverage through the heat of summer. In cooler regions, it is often used as a seasonal accent, then moved indoors before frost to keep the color going. Distinctive FeaturesThis cultivar is grown for its richly colored leaves, which are typically burgundy to deep red with a bold, tropical look and a lightly toothed edge. The habit is upright to mounding and can be kept compact with pinching or light trimming, which also encourages thicker branching. Flowers are usually minor compared to the foliage, so the plant performs as a color-forward shrub rather than a bloom feature. In bright light with steady moisture, it stays full and vibrant, making it a reliable choice for high-impact foliage design. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best foliage color in bright light. Soil: Fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil that holds moisture without staying soggy. Water: Medium, keep consistently moist and do not allow the root zone to dry out for long periods. USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 10 to 11. Mature Size: Typically 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide in containers and seasonal plantings, and it can grow larger in frost-free landscapes. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a bold foliage centerpiece where deep burgundy leaves can anchor a main view. Containers: Plant in large pots to bring tropical color to patios, pool areas, and entryways. Color Contrast: Pair with chartreuse, silver, or green foliage plants to create strong, clean contrast. Mixed Borders: Use in warm-season beds to add depth and a lush, filled-in look behind flowering annuals and perennials. Warm-Climate Hedges: In frost-free areas, plant in rows and lightly shape for a colorful, leafy hedge effect. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Pinch or trim stems as needed to maintain shape and encourage a denser, bushier plant. Watering: Water regularly, especially in containers, since drought stress can cause leaf drop and dull color. Feeding: Feed during active growth to support leaf size and color, especially for potted plants. Temperature: Protect from cold and frost, and move containers to a bright, protected space before temperatures drop. Placement: Shelter from strong wind to reduce leaf tearing and keep the plant looking clean. Why Choose Tiki Lava Flow Copperleaf? High-Impact Foliage: Deep burgundy to red leaves deliver strong color without relying on flowers. Fast Fill-In: Quick growth builds a full, leafy presence that makes plantings look complete. Heat Season Star: Performs best in warm weather when many plants need extra help to look their best. Design Versatility: Works as a container feature, a bold border accent, or a warm-climate hedge component. Easy Shaping: Responds well to pinching and light trimming for a tighter, more polished look.
