Latin Bible 1774

6B Biblia Sacra. Vulgate edition. Bassani, 1774.  Notes The Latin Vulgate is the authoritative Latin translation of the Bible produced primarily by St. Jerome in the late 4th century (c. 382–405 AD), commissioned by Pope Damasus I to create a standardized and reliable biblical text for the Western Church. Jerome translated the Old Testament largely from Hebrew sources rather than the Greek Septuagint, while revising existing Latin versions of the New Testament, a method that gave the Vulgate exceptional accuracy for its time. For over a millennium, the Vulgate was the dominant Bible of Western Christianity, shaping theology, liturgy, and scholarship throughout medieval Europe, and it remained the official biblical text of the Roman Catholic Church until modern vernacular translations emerged, making it one of the most influential Bible editions in history.
