Autumn is passing. Anna, a Chinese-American woman serving a prison sentence for murder, takes her first vacation in seven years — and it happens to fall at precisely this moment. The city she must travel to is Seattle, shrouded in rain and fog. Anna never looked forward to this vacation. Her body knew the aversion to the outside world before her mind did: earrings worn for the first time in years left an itch on her skin, and a phone call from the prison interrupted her the moment she changed into new clothes. The film follows a female model prisoner on vacation, yet she seems to have no room to enjoy it. Her time began moving again. Director Lee Man-hee's version and its remake by Director Kim Tae-yong share the same season, yet each holds a distinctly different inner landscape. In Lee Man-hee's work (confirmed through the screenplay), autumn still carries warm sunshine and cool breezes. In Kim Tae-yong's telling, autumn is simply damp and bleak. The late autumn scenery is the world as seen through Hyerim's eyes forty years ago, and through Anna's eyes forty years later. They suffered similar wounds but each chose a different path to healing. Hyerim has the ease to cover a sleeping stranger with a newspaper and the curiosity to accept a man's proposal. Anna, by contrast, cuts herself off entirely from all stimulation — numbing her senses, simply playing dead. Anna had long since stopped her own clock and lived well with nothing happening. Then one day, her mother's death sets her vacation in motion. Rain still falls on the neighborhood she visits for the first time in seven years; her family's fuss feels unfamiliar. Just when she wonders whether she should return to prison, a man appears — Hoon, who at first glance resembles a host-bar employee, fleeing from a client's husband. He borrows bus fare from Anna and leaves his watch as collateral. The moment Hoon's watch is placed on Anna's wrist, her own clock begins to move again. Confronted with the original work's three propositions — "A woman is released from prison. She meets a man. And returns." — Director Kim Tae-yong, who wrote the screenplay, seems to have little interest in romance. Instead, he carefully observes the changes in a woman with a deep wound as she meets a man who is entirely unaware of her pain. Anna and Hoon spend the day playing various games — bumper cars, borrowed identities, invented dialogues. Each time, Anna's expressionless face forms a slightly different expression. Anna's face, which the camera follows relentlessly, is what the film is ultimately trying to draw out. Throughout the story, Anna is subjected to a series of small shocks. She startles awake when Hoon strikes the bus. She recoils from his touch when she had been the one to initiate. At an abandoned amusement park, she is frightened by a ghost tour group that arrives unexpectedly. If only one could capture on camera the moment a heart opens… The miracle of connection arrives only after such stimulations accumulate. Watching another couple from their bumper car, Hoon gives voice to the pair — a man trying to leave, a woman trying to hold on. "That's not love," Hoon says. "It's just memory and obsession." Before he can voice the woman's next line, Anna interrupts. "Don't look at me like that. Why have you changed?" Her voice rises, carrying her own story, and she even manages false tears. At that moment, the man in the scene runs back to the woman and dances with her. Anna suddenly starts running. Only when she stops does she finally share her story. What begins in English shifts into Chinese. Hoon, who cannot understand Chinese, responds instinctively with 'hao' (good) and 'huai' (bad). Their conversation — beyond the limits of language — resonates deeply. It is the director's conviction that communication is possible without lengthy explanation or full understanding, and it is the fantasy that this film most genuinely desires. As Seattle's rain and fog begin to lift, Anna's real vacation — her real journey — seems to begin at last. Hoon's games and the stimulations of each surrounding situation draw out countless expressions from Tang Wei's face, all within the quiet category of 'expressionless.' When the time comes for the two to part, Hoon says: "Smile. I love your smile." Director Kim Tae-yong's direction makes the audience long for that smile just as earnestly as Hoon does. The director has said: "In cinematic terms, it seemed the essence lay in the dead time — before and after the dialogue, before and after the incident." In other words, this is a film you see as much as you wait for. Anna clearly laughs, is startled, hesitates, and feels sadness. Tang Wei's face brings the dead time of the film back to life. The moment she smiled. If Lee Man-hee's version is a short and poignant love story between a man and a woman, Kim Tae-yong's is a film about a single day that a woman endures. It depicts the process by which Anna's senses gradually return — until a new expression appears on a face that had held none. Unlike the original, where a single day felt cruel, there is no timer running on Anna and Hoon's encounter. The film does not even ask how these two people will live afterward. When the camera that had followed Anna's face so persistently finally captures her smile, the simple certainty that a woman's stopped time has begun to flow again is more than enough. The memory of the day they shared is not regrettable for being short — it is a gift, given entirely in itself. — Kang Byeong-jin — Important Notes for LP Purchases Jacket / Contents / Packaging Minor jacket wrinkles, corner dents, or surface cracks that do not affect playback are not eligible for return or exchange. The inner sleeve may crack due to contact with the disc; this is not a defect eligible for return or exchange. Disc labels may not be applied with perfect smoothness due to the manufacturing process. Damage to the outer shrink wrap that does not affect the product itself is not eligible for return or exchange. Playback Turntables without tonearm or counterweight adjustment (typically all-in-one models) may skip on tracks with large dynamic swings due to the lighter tonearm weight. Playback issues caused by the playback device are not eligible for return or exchange; use a turntable with adjustable tonearm settings. Static electricity or dust may cause uneven playback; this can usually be resolved using a dedicated cleaning product. Dust accumulation on the stylus needle can also cause playback irregularities. Disc Condition The disc surface may appear slightly uneven or warped. Returns or exchanges are accepted only if there is an actual playback issue. The center hole may be manufactured slightly smaller than standard to minimize distortion and maintain consistency over repeated plays. If it does not fit the turntable spindle, the hole can be adjusted using a dedicated tool. Minor surface marks or uneven finishing may occasionally be present. Returns or exchanges are accepted only when playback is affected. Color Discs Actual disc color may differ from images shown online. Color variation between individual copies may occur during the manufacturing process. Small color inclusions or dye irregularities may be present and are inherent to the color disc production process. Exchange / Return For exchange or return requests due to clear manufacturing defects, please contact the customer center with photos and/or video of the defect, along with the model name of your playback device. Because LP jackets are highly susceptible to damage during shipping and are difficult to resell, returns due to accidental purchases or a change of mind are not accepted. Please purchase carefully.
