Lapis Lazuli ~ Red | EDM-1 Limited Edition of 50

Description |  In Lapis Lazuli ~ Red, Ellen de Meijer recasts her archetypal Wall Street executive with striking graphic force. The figure, defined by her Civil War–styled belts, golden buckle, and prominent sapphire-blue ring, stands with a quiet yet formidable presence. Here, her attire shifts into teal against a vivid red ground, a backdrop that heightens the work’s intensity and imbues it with both danger and allure. The subject’s white gloves—a recurring symbol in de Meijer’s work—speak of detachment, of hands never fully in touch, never stained, a shield from direct involvement. This sense of distance mirrors the carefully curated personas of corporate and digital life, where power is maintained but emotional authenticity is withheld. Through the halftone textures and flat planes of color, the screen print amplifies the tensions of the original painting: material wealth and spectacle, privilege and fragility, authority and emotional absence. Lapis Lazuli ~ Red transforms de Meijer’s archetype into a graphic icon of contemporary ambition, resonating with the contradictions of our age.
