Laphroaig Quarter Cask Double Cask Matured Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ml

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is one of the most beloved expressions in the Laphroaig core range, double matured to amplify the iconic Islay peat character with an extra layer of sweet oak. From the Laphroaig Distillery on the southern coast of Islay, established in 1815 and the only single malt to carry a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales (granted 1994), this whisky begins life like all Laphroaig, first matured in ex bourbon American oak barrels at the distillery's coastal warehouses. The spirit is then transferred to smaller quarter casks, roughly a quarter the size of a standard American Standard Barrel, which dramatically increases the spirit to wood contact ratio and accelerates flavor development. The technique revives a 19th century tradition of transporting whisky on packhorses in smaller casks. Bottled at a robust 48% ABV and non chill filtered, Quarter Cask retains the full body, oils, and character of cask strength Laphroaig while delivering an unexpectedly sweet, vanilla and coconut layered counterpoint to the brand's signature heavy peat smoke. Winner of the Best Islay Single Malt NAS category at the World Whiskies Awards 2023, Gold at the IWSC 2013 and 2021, and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2011. Nose: Burning embers of peat in a crofter's fireplace, hints of coconut, banana, vanilla, toffee, caramel, and a soft maritime salinity. Heavy peat layered with iodine, citrus, and chocolate develop with time in the glass. Palate: Full bodied, deep, complex, and smoky, yet offers a surprising gentle sweetness from the extra oak contact. Roasted coffee, tar, rubber, exotic fruits (mango, passion fruit), mild spices, charcoal, and pear syrup ride alongside the signature Laphroaig peat profile. Finish: Long and lingering, drying appropriately with smoke and spice, balsamic notes, precious wood, and a final freshness that builds rather than fades. FAQ What is a quarter cask and why does it matter? A quarter cask is roughly one quarter the size of a standard American Standard Barrel, holding around 50 liters versus the standard 200 liters. The smaller size means much more spirit to wood surface contact, which accelerates flavor extraction from the oak. The technique revives a 19th century tradition when whisky was transported by packhorse in smaller, more practical casks. The result is a whisky that drinks older and more flavorful than its actual age. How is Quarter Cask different from the standard Laphroaig 10? The standard Laphroaig 10 Year is bottled at 40% ABV and chill filtered. Quarter Cask is non chill filtered and bottled at the higher 48% ABV, with the added secondary quarter cask maturation contributing more vanilla, coconut, and oak sweetness alongside the iconic Laphroaig peat. Many fans consider Quarter Cask the better everyday Laphroaig despite the lower price point of the 10. Why is Laphroaig so divisive? Laphroaig is one of the heaviest peated whiskies on Islay, with strong medicinal, iodine, tar, and seaweed character that drinkers either love or hate. The brand's official slogan, "The most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies," embraces this reputation. Quarter Cask, with its added oak sweetness, is often recommended as the most approachable entry into Laphroaig for those new to heavily peated single malts.
