Portrait of a Woman in Renaissance Dress — Signed S. J. Bruyn, Antwerp (1882)

Portrait of a Woman in Renaissance Dress — Signed S. J. Bruyn, Antwerp (1882)     A captivating late-19th-century oil painting depicting a woman dressed in Renaissance-style attire, signed S. J. Bruyn, Anvers (Antwerp) and dated 1882. Found in Paris, this intimate portrait blends the romanticism of Old Master influence with the refined technique of the Belgian academic tradition.   The sitter is rendered with luminous softness: her dark hair swept neatly back, her expression calm and contemplative, and her lace-edged ruff glowing against the deep, atmospheric background. The richly patterned golden garment evokes the opulence of 16th–17th century courtly fashion, a nod to the Renaissance revival movement so loved by 19th-century artists and collectors.   Set against a moody palette of greens, browns, and umber, the figure emerges with emotional depth and subtle realism. The canvas rests on its original stretcher with keys intact and displays expected craquelure and gentle wear — all consistent with a genuine late-19th-century Continental portrait.   Though little is recorded about S. J. Bruyn, the Antwerp inscription suggests training tied to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, a powerhouse for historical and character portraiture during this period. Whatever the story behind the woman, the painting carries a timeless Old-World charm. Details Artist: S. J. Bruyn Signed: Upper left, “S. J.
