This stone gets its name from the Labrador region of Canada, where it was first discovered in the 1770s, though Inuit people knew it as "fire stone" long before. Labradorite forms from slowly cooling magma deep within the Earth's crust, developing layers as calcium and sodium-rich feldspar crystallize. Its famous iridescence (labradorescence) comes from light scattering off these microscopic, alternating mineral layers, a phenomenon requiring slow cooling for proper separation.
