Kobold Blazing Star

Kobold Blazing Star (Liatris spicata 'Kobold')Kobold Blazing Star delivers strong vertical color in midsummer, with upright purple flower spikes that make borders look more intentional. It is compact enough for the front to middle of beds, but still tall enough to add real structure and rhythm. The blooms are a reliable magnet for butterflies and other pollinators, bringing movement to sunny plantings. It also works well in cutting gardens, giving you long-lasting stems for fresh or dried arrangements. Distinctive FeaturesThis compact blazing star forms a neat clump of narrow, grass-like green leaves, then sends up sturdy spikes packed with small, tufted flowers in deep purple to lavender-purple tones. Bloom typically runs from July to August, with flowers opening along the spike for a prolonged display. The upright habit stays clean without sprawling, especially in full sun and well-drained soil. After flowering, the seedheads can add texture if left in place, and the plant generally holds up well through summer heat once established. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for best flowering and strong, upright stems. Soil: Well-drained soil, including sandy or loamy beds, and avoid wet winter conditions. Water: Medium, water regularly to establish, then moderate drought tolerance once established. USDA Zones: 3 to 8. Mature Size: About 18 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Notable Traits: Excellent for pollinators, good cut and dried flower, and reported deer resistance. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant a tight group to create a midsummer focal point of vertical purple spikes above lower perennials. Front to Mid Border: Use to add upright rhythm without blocking views or crowding neighboring plants. Pollinator Gardens: Include as a high-value nectar plant that draws butterflies and beneficial insects. Cut Flower Beds: Grow in rows for straight, long stems that perform well fresh or dried. Meadow Style Plantings: Combine with ornamental grasses and daisies for a natural look with clean structure. Low Maintenance Care Drainage: Prioritize drainage, especially in winter, to keep crowns healthy and long-lived. Watering: Water the first season for strong rooting, then water during extended drought for best bloom. Staking: Stake only if grown in richer soil or partial shade where stems may lean. Deadheading: Remove spent spikes for a tidier look, or leave seedheads for texture and wildlife value. Cleanup: Cut back old stems in late fall or late winter before new growth begins. Why Choose Kobold Blazing Star? Compact Vertical Color: Delivers strong height and bloom impact in a garden-friendly size. Pollinator Power: Brings consistent butterfly and bee activity during the summer bloom window. Heat-Friendly Performance: Handles summer sun well once established, especially in well-drained soil. Great for Arrangements: Spikes cut cleanly and dry well for long-lasting use. Easy to Place: Fits small beds, borders, and containers where taller varieties feel oversized. If you want a compact perennial that still delivers a bold midsummer statement, Kobold Blazing Star is a dependable choice. Give it sun and drainage, and it will return with upright spikes that bring color, pollinators, and clean structure to the garden year after year.
