Knokke Le Zoute

Keith Haring once spent his summers here, quietly painting along a stretch of Belgian coastline few outside the country could place on a map. Knokke sits on Belgium's Flemish shore, close enough that sunbathers can trace the horizon toward Britain on a clear day, drawing those who slip away from Antwerp and Brussels for something slower and, by design, undiscovered. Knokke Le Zoute follows journalist Adam Robb's long weekend through the town, tracing its rituals scene by scene: golf cart tours down quiet streets, lunches of freshly caught North Sea prawns, afternoons among the seaside's contemporary art galleries, and stroopwafels at Marie Siska Café, where locals return without fail each summer. Robb, who has spent his career reporting on Europe's most stylish corners for Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, and Food & Wine, renders Knokke as a place built on restraint: a taste for the fantastic paired with a preference for staying unnoticed. For the traveler who wants the coast without the crowd, Knokke Le Zoute offers a rare kind of luxury: a town that never needed to be found to be loved.
