Upfront: A Black Women’s Newspaper. Vol. 1, No. 3. Summer 1984.

Washington, D. C.: The Upfront Collective, 1984. 14-1/2 x 11-1/4 inches. 16pp. Tabloid format newspaper. Toning and light edgewear, with a few short tears and chips to edges and tiny chip to spine; center fold line. Good+. A rare issue of this short-lived newspaper, published from 1984-85. Includes articles on formerly incarcerated women, sexism, and a review of Sister Outsider, by Audre Lorde. The long feature article by Dr. Andree Nicola-McLaughlin, “Can the Oppressed Be the Oppressor?” addresses the idea of traditionally oppressed people taking on the role of the oppressor. Nicola-McLaughlin points to Dominican Prime Minister Eugenia Charles, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and Mayor Ed Koch as examples of people oppressed in one aspect who are nevertheless “no friend” of other people like themselves: “Sisters and brothers, in 1984, the people of these United States called America and the peoples of the world are confronted with startling new contradictions. These contradictions challenge our traditional understandings of social antagonisms based upon class, race, and sex.” A physical copy of Vol. 1, No. 1 must exist somewhere, as it’s been digitized, but OCLC notes only internet holdings.
