To assess the degree of Civilization in a society, look into its prison.... [Drop title].

(n. p.): [1972]. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. Flyer, printed recto only. Typescript text. Light toning; stamp to upper corner, "Boss Archives"; penciled date, "'72" to upper corner. Good. Flyer issued by an unknown prisoners rights organization, possibly the Berkeley-based Ghetto 5, although the writing is somewhat better than other Ghetto 5 flyers we have seen. The text reads, in part: "To assess the degree of Civilization in a society, look into its prison. The events which culminated in the massacre of inmates and civilian guards at Attica Prison in New York last year brought to the minds of many not only the inhumanity and incoherence of the U.S. Penal System which already had been seen startlingly [sic] in the aftermath of the Soledad Prison killings...." A fairly vague and unclear call for prisoners rights and the freeing of political prisoners, possibly partially quoting another source. (We are now fairly sure this is a Ghetto 5 production.)
