George Jackson Lives. Those Who Brought You the Murder of George Jackson...The State of California Presents the Trial of the San Quentin Six. [Drop title].

San Raphael, California: 23-1/2 x 17-3/4 inches. Broadside. White stock offset printed in red, black and yellow. Slight rippling, small chip, and minor damn-staining to top edge; two short tears to right edge; pinholes to corners; minor soiling; light soiling and evidence of tape removal to verso. Good. Malaquias Montoya's justly famous protest poster created for the trial of the San Quentin Six. Thought-provoking and graphically vivid, the poster is designed to look like a promotional piece for a lurid film, in this case "featuring: Racism. Fascism. Injustice." The prone silhouette of George Jackson lies in the upper portion of the poster, with the words "George Jackson Lives" behind him, while in the center the silhouettes of the six men being tried are shown shackled and chained by their throats and gagged; the bottom third of the poster has the words "San Quentin Six" loosely constructed out of dripping and pooled blood. Montoya (b. 1938) is a Chicano poster artist who was especially prolific in the Bay Area in the 1960s and '70s. He helped found the Mexican American Liberated Art Front, and was a hugely influential figure in the Chicano Art Movement. Not located in OCLC, although we note one holding at the Smithsonian and another at UC Santa Barbara.
