Striking poster illustrated with the faces of 48 political prisoners in the U.S. in the late 1980s, issued by the Freedom Now: Campaign for Amnesty & Human Rights for Political Prisoners in the U.S.A. Per a statement issued in Social Justice: Spring 1989, Vol. 16, No. 1: "In December 1988, on the 40th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Freedom Now Campaign was launched at the United Nations. Freedom Now, international in scope, seeks to remedy conditions of confinement which violate international standards of human rights and seeks amnesty for all political prisoners in the United States. It will call upon the government of the United States to acknowledge that it holds political prisoners, to come into compliance with international standards regarding their treatment, and to proceed with their release. The effort is composed of families and friends of political prisoners, church leaders, professionals, and community activists, including dozens of former political prisoners." The group determined there were over 100 such political prisoners in the U.S. at that time: "leaders of the Black/New Afrikan liberation movement, the Puerto Rican independence movement, the struggle for Native American sovereignty; Plowshares antinuclear resisters and North American anti-imperialists; Irish Republicans, grand jury resisters, and others".
