An essay on Puerto Rican protest music, which argues that "[i]n the middle of 1970, new voices were heard in Puerto Rico -- a new song was acknowledged by those in the Puerto Rican Independence Movement. The protest song was being recognized as such. Let it be understood that it was always there, from the first cry of rebellion of the'taino' indian accompanied by the rhythm of the river and the wind of the nearby sea, to the cry of revolution during the 1868 'Frito de Lares' accompanied by the blow of the machete, to the modern songs of Roy Brown, accompanied by his guitar."
