Black Cross Nurses Watching a UNIA Parade on Seventh Avenue.

New York: James Van Der Zee Institute, (1924). Later generation. 8 x 10 inches. B&w photograph, with photographer's name and date in the plate and the stamp of the James Van Der Zee Institute to verso. Small crease to one corner; sticker shadow and pencil and ink notations to verso. Very Good. A later generation print of Van Der Zee's "Black Cross Nurses Watching a UNIA Parade on Seventh Avenue" (per the title used for it at SFMOMA). The parade, held in August, 1924, in Harlem, opened the annual United Negro Improvement Association convention, and featured, among other things, Marcus Garvey -- out on bail after having to miss the former year's parade for his conviction for misusing the postal system by selling stock through it for the Black Star Steamship Line -- a Black Jesus, a Black Mary, a Black God, and a Black Republic. In the photograph, eight Black women nurses dressed all in white stand together at the front of the crowd lining the street, while what appears to be the tail end of the progression (or perhaps merely a break in it) on the left side of the image.
