London: John Murray, 1931. First edition, presentation copy. 9 x 6 inches. Frontispiece,xiii,[1],380,[2, ads]pp, plus seven b&w plates. Blue cloth stamped in black to spine, in white dust jacket printed in black. Bump to lower board edges; spine lightly faded and spotted; light foxing/soiling to text block and slightly to title leaf. Dust jacket price clipped and somewhat grimy/soiled, with darkening to spine, front, and rear panels. Good. Good dust jacket. A scarce presentation copy of this biography of a leader in the British women's suffrage movement, with a plate to the front paste-down reading, "Presented by Miss Agnes Garrett in memory of her sister Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett". Fawcett (1847-1929) campaigned tirelessly for women's rights, including access to higher education, and from 1897-1919 led the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, Britain's largest women's suffrage organization. She famously said, "I cannot say I became a suffragist. I always was one, from the time I was old enough to think at all about the principles of Representative Government." Uncommon in commerce.
