Press Photograph of Helen Keller with a Bust of Herself

(n. p.): 1942. 9 x 7 inches. B&w photograph, with snipe, stamp, and ink notation to verso. Light rippling; short crease to lower edge; recent sticker to verso. Good. An uncommon press photograph from April 6, 1942 of Helen Keller touching a bust of herself, with her close friend, sculptor Jo Davidson, who made the bust, standing in the background. Davidson reportedly called his work on this sculpture "the most inspirational thing I've ever done" (newspressnow.com). The snipe reads: "HELEN KELLER 'SEES' HERSELF. Blind from birth, Miss Helen Keller [puts to?] use her sensitive fingers to 'see' this striking plastic likeness of herself made by world-famous sculptor Jo Davidson, who stands in the background. Typical of Davidson's work, the bust portrays the character, patience and kindliness of the great woman who has overcome the handicaps of blind, deaf and dumb to live a full, useful life."
