The catenary is the electrical wires that transfer the power from the power poles to the power pick-ups on the railway train locomotive. Being exposed to the elements, and birds, can cause the catenary to get dirty which reduces the efficiency of the power transfer. The Motorturmwagen rides the rails, cleaning as it goes along. No modern electrical railway system is complete without one.
