Key to Heating Sign

Ensure your building meets heating system identification requirements with a durable Key to Heating sign. Designed for mechanical and boiler rooms, this sign helps identify heating controls, supports building operations, and improves maintenance efficiency while assisting personnel during inspections, servicing, and emergency situations. What This Sign is For: A Key to Heating sign identifies the heating system serving various areas or zones of a building. It provides maintenance personnel, building engineers, inspectors, and emergency responders with a clear reference to heating controls, helping them quickly identify the correct equipment or valves during routine maintenance, troubleshooting, or emergency situations. Legal Requirement Explained: While a Key to Heating sign is not universally mandated by a single federal regulation, it may be required by the New York City Housing Maintenance Code, NYC Building Code, or by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) as part of approved mechanical system documentation or building operation requirements. Proper identification of heating systems supports safe maintenance practices, facilitates inspections, and helps ensure building personnel can efficiently operate and service heating equipment.  Who is Required to Post This Sign: - Commercial buildings - Multifamily residential buildings - Mixed-use properties - Industrial and manufacturing facilities - Institutional buildings, including schools and healthcare facilities - Any property with central heating equipment or multiple heating zones where system identification is necessary for operation or maintenance Where We Recommend This Sign Be Posted: - Inside or immediately outside the boiler room or mechanical room - Adjacent to the primary heating equipment or heating control panel - Near heating valves, piping diagrams, or system controls where building personnel can easily reference it - In a clearly visible location that can be accessed during inspections, maintenance, or emergencies Unacceptable Locations to Post This Sign: - Behind equipment, piping, or stored materials that obstruct visibility - Inside locked cabinets or enclosed spaces where it cannot be readily seen - In unrelated utility rooms that do not contain heating equipment - On removable objects or temporary surfaces - In areas where moisture, heat, or physical damage will quickly deteriorate the sign unless the material is specifically rated for those conditions Recommended Height / Installation Requirements: - Mount the sign at approximately 48–60 inches above the finished floor to the center of the sign for comfortable viewing. - Install the sign in a permanent, clearly visible location with an unobstructed line of sight. - Use durable materials suitable for the environment, particularly in boiler or mechanical rooms where heat, moisture, or dust may be present. - Ensure the text remains legible and is not blocked by equipment, doors, or stored materials.
