Antique Kerman Handwoven Traditional Rug, 52788

This antique Kerman rug originates from Persia and exemplifies traditional design elements characteristic of Kerman carpets. Dating back to circa 1940, this rug showcases a harmonious blend of ivory and navy hues, with a primary background of ivory and a contrasting navy border. Kerman carpets have a distinguished history that traces back to the early 17th century, known for their superior craftsmanship and intricate artistic beauty. Kerman, situated in southeastern Iran, is renowned for its rich carpet weaving traditions that reflect a variety of cultural influences. The historical significance of these rugs is deeply rooted in Kerman's long-standing heritage as a center of textile artistry. The artistic features of this Kerman rug are evident in its detailed and symmetrical design. A prominent central medallion forms the focal point, featuring an elongated oval shape with pointed ends. This medallion is intricately detailed with floral motifs in shades of dark red, blue, and beige, creating a complex and cohesive visual that subtly blends into the surrounding patterns. Smaller medallions and additional floral designs extend from the central medallion, enhancing the continuity of the rug's design. The field of the rug, surrounding the central medallion, is densely decorated with intricate floral and vine patterns set against a cream or beige background. This neutral base effectively highlights the more vibrant shades of the floral motifs, which include various tones of red, blue, and pink. The color palette of the rug emphasizes a combination of beige, blue, red, and pink, with the beige field serving as a neutral backdrop that accentuates the striking contrast of the other colors. The blue sections, particularly within the medallion and borders, provide a cooling contrast to the warmer red hues, contributing to the rug's vibrant and harmonious appearance. Constructed from wool on a cotton foundation, this Kerman rug demonstrates the high-quality materials and craftsmanship typical of the region. The technical quality of Kerman carpets is highly regarded, often featuring fine knot counts that allow for detailed and precise designs. The natural high-quality wool from the region adds to the durability and longevity of these carpets. The evolution of Kerman rug styles can be seen in the simpler aesthetic of post-1920s designs, contrasting with the elaborate designs of earlier periods. This particular circa 1940 piece reflects both the continuity and adaptation within the Kerman weaving tradition, making it significant not only as a decorative item but also as a cultural artifact.
