Japanese Samurai Sword in Black and White with a Folded Blade The hardwood saya of the Setsuya is finished in deep, high-gloss black and deliberately kept understated. Around the koiguchi and kurigata, the smooth surface is interrupted by finely textured sections that add subtle depth to the otherwise restrained design. The white sageo made from Japanese silk creates a clear contrast against the black lacquer and continues the colour scheme of the tsuka. The fittings follow the same consistent black-and-white contrast. The tsuka is lined with genuine black rayskin and tightly wrapped with white Japanese silk. The tsuba, fuchi and kashira are made from iron and finished in dark tones. The round tsuba and the other fittings feature a subtle relief-like surface texture that complements the restrained overall appearance. A small gold-coloured accent is provided by the dark habaki with its circular mon. The katana’s name is derived from this interplay of deep black and clear white: Setsuya (雪夜) – “Snowy Night”. The hand-forged blade is made from folded 1060 carbon steel. The folding process creates a fine, irregular layered pattern across the blade surface, which is brought out by the subsequent sand polish. A full tang secured within the tsuka by two mekugi provides a solid construction. With folded 1060 carbon steel, genuine rayskin, Japanese silk wrapping, iron fittings and its high-gloss black hardwood saya, the Setsuya combines functional construction with a particularly clean and restrained black-and-white design. “The willow is green, the flower is red.” Features Hand-forged in the traditional Japanese style: Yes Suitable for technique training (Battodo): Yes Suitable for cutting practice (Tameshigiri): No Tsuka (handle): Hardwood wrapped in genuine rayskin Tsuba (handguard): Iron Fuchi (collar): Iron Kashira (pommel): Iron Ito (handle wrap): Wrapped in white Japanese silk Saya (scabbard): Hardwood, black lacquered Sageo (scabbard cord): Wrapped in Japanese silk Overall length: 103 cm / 40.5 in Blade Material: 1060 steel, folded Clay-tempered (genuine hamon): No Battle-ready: Yes Folded steel: Yes Full tang: Yes (2 mekugi) Sand-polished: Yes Sharpened with Japanese water stones: No Bo-hi (blood groove): No Blade length: 72 cm / 28.3 in Blade thickness: 7 mm / 0.28 in Blade width: 3.2 cm / 1.26 in Hardness: 55–58 HRC
