Kinzuta Katana with a Clay-Tempered T10 Blade The black lacquered hardwood saya of the Kinzuta is decorated along its entire length with a fine gold-coloured pattern of vines and blossoms. The flowing ornaments stand out against the glossy black background and give the saya an elegant and highly detailed appearance. This motif also gives the katana its name: Kinzuta (金蔦) – “Golden Vine”. The black sageo made from Japanese silk is interwoven with yellow accents, complementing the black-and-gold colour scheme of the saya. The tsuka is lined with genuine, golden-toned rayskin and tightly wrapped with black Japanese silk. The tsuba, fuchi and kashira are made from iron and finished in dark tones. The round tsuba is particularly distinctive, featuring finely detailed gold-coloured decorations with numerous butterflies. The habaki adds another accent with its golden finish and reddish mon. The hand-forged blade is made from T10 carbon steel and has been traditionally differentially clay hardened. The resulting genuine hamon runs along the cutting edge in a lively, wave-like pattern and gives the blade its distinctive appearance. A subsequent sand polish provides an even surface and clearly highlights the hardening line. A full tang secured within the tsuka by two mekugi provides a solid construction. The sharpened blade is suitable for cutting practice. With T10 carbon steel, genuine differential clay hardening, genuine rayskin, Japanese silk wrapping, iron fittings and its black-and-gold hardwood saya, the Kinzuta combines functional construction with a richly detailed black-and-gold design. “The sword is a mirror of the mind.” Features Hand-forged in the traditional Japanese style: Yes Suitable for technique training (Battodo): Yes Suitable for cutting practice (Tameshigiri): Yes Tsuka (handle): Hardwood wrapped in genuine rayskin Tsuba (handguard): Iron with butterfly motif Fuchi (collar): Iron Kashira (pommel): Iron Menuki (handle ornaments): Zinc alloy Ito (handle wrap): Wrapped in Japanese silk Saya (scabbard): Hardwood, black lacquer with golden vine work Sageo (scabbard cord): Wrapped in Japanese silk Overall length: 103 cm / 40.5 in Blade Material: T10 steel Clay-tempered (genuine hamon): Yes Battle-ready: Yes Folded steel: No Full tang: Yes (2 mekugi) Sand-polished: Yes Sharpened with Japanese water stones: No Bo-hi (blood groove): Yes Blade length: 72 cm / 28.3 in Blade thickness: 7 mm / 0.28 in Blade width: 3.2 cm / 1.26 in Hardness: 55–58 HRC
