Produced for the historic 1989 American Kangchenjunga Expedition, this original promotional poster commemorates the first successful American ascent of Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain. Led by legendary mountaineer Lou Whittaker, the expedition brought together an exceptional team of American climbers for an attempt on the formidable Himalayan peak. A dramatic photograph of Kangchenjunga dominates the design, accompanied by text in English and Nepali identifying the mountain as the “Five Treasure-Houses of the Snow.” The poster lists Whittaker and the expedition members alongside its commercial sponsors, including JanSport, Allied Fibers, Caprolan Nylon, and Hydrofil, placing it firmly within the expedition itself rather than advertising a film. On May 18 and 21, 1989, members of the team successfully reached the summit, establishing the first American ascent of Kangchenjunga. The expedition included several important figures in American mountaineering, among them Ed Viesturs, John Roskelley, Jim Wickwire, Phil Ershler, and George Dunn. More than a scenic climbing poster, this piece documents a specific milestone in American Himalayan exploration and the ambitious expedition that achieved it. Size: 28" x 22" Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear, fading and toning. General border wear. Soft background creasing.
