Cedar Inheritance Accent Rug – Charcoal

Old and new, new and old—both are woven into the very fiber of our Cedar Inheritance Accent Rug designed by Ts’mysen/Tsimshian artist Kandi McGilton. Made of 100% cotton and the perfect size for an entryway or kitchen, our Cedar Inheritance Accent Rug brings both Native art and Native values into your home. "I’ve used this ancient design in a modern way, on something that's meant to be durable and long lasting while still maintaining the old ways of beauty and functionality," shares Kandi. This design is based on traditional Northwest Coast woven cedar mats, which were and are used in a variety of ways by Northwest Coast tribes. "I have woven a salmon offering mat with this design on it," shares Kandi. "A salmon offering mat is a show of gratitude and respect. We would either return the bones of the salmon back to the sea, or burn them in a fire by placing them on a cedar mat as a sign of respect. These acts return the spirit of the salmon back to the sea, carrying the memory of our honoring, and thus the salmon return the following years to give themselves to us so that we may continue to feed ourselves, our families, and our communities."   Rugs can both literally and figuratively ground a space, can help define an area, and can add a bit of much-needed color and interest below our feet. "Rugs can be a great way to Indigenize a space," Kandi says, "and to bring in traditional patterns and use them in a modern way." Decorate with our Cedar Inheritance Accent Rugs and let them weave timeless designs into the fabric of your home.
