Kai Says Hi

Kai has plenty to say, even when he does not use spoken words. School can be full of too many sounds: buzzing hallways, ringing bells, running feet, and cheering crowds. Kai, an autistic boy who communicates without spoken words, experiences all of it in his own way. He may say hello with a wiggle, a giggle, a tap, a smile, or a try. He may use his body, picture cards, or AAC tablet to share what he wants, needs, and feels. At first, Kai's classmates do not always understand. Jordan moves a carefully placed block. Lee invites Kai to race before noticing that he needs time. But with Ms. Bell's gentle guidance, the children learn to slow down, ask before touching, wait for a yes or no, respect sensory needs, and play in ways that make room for everyone. Soon, a quiet block rainbow and an imaginative playground adventure help Kai and his classmates discover that friendship does not require everyone to communicate, move, or play the same way. Written in warm, engaging rhyme, Kai Says Hi is a joyful, acceptance-based picture book that celebrates neurodiversity, autistic communication, consent, empathy, and belonging. Rather than asking Kai to change in order to fit in, the story teaches the people around him to listen with their eyes, ears, and hearts. The book also includes a comprehensive Kai-Kind Guide for young readers, families, caregivers, and educators, featuring: Age-appropriate explanations of autism, nonspeaking communication, AAC, sensory overwhelm, consent, and stimming Practical friendship rules and inclusive phrases children can use Guidance on repairing mistakes with care Discussion questions Classroom activities Ideal for children ages 6-8, families, elementary classrooms, libraries, counselors, speech-language pathologists, and special education or SEL programs, Kai Says Hi opens meaningful conversations while remaining playful, hopeful, and child-centered. Every child has something to say. Sometimes we simply need to learn a new way to listen.
