Kahlo The Frame

Purchased in 1939 at a Paris exhibition, The Frame hangs in the Centre Pompidou as the only painting by Frida Kahlo owned by a European museum. A remarkable fact considering the artists’ worldwide popularity. The Frame consists of two parts: a self-portrait on an aluminum sheet, and an overlaid glass plate painted with stylistic birds and vibrant flowers. Kahlo repurposed the glass, which was likely intended for a mirror or photograph, after purchasing it from a market in Oaxaca, Mexico. Sliding one of the self-portraits for which she was known into the painted border, thus providing both the title and differentiating this work from her other portraits. Each tube doubles as a displayable container, filled with Plus-Plus colors drawn from the color palette of iconic works of art, like Kahlo’s The Frame. Inside each Inspired item you'll find an educational flyer, where you'll discover more about each artist, their style, and their life and work.
