"Kagoshima Samurai" Vintage Nutshell Bell

This listing is for a vintage Japanese nutshell bell. These bells are charming folk art craft pieces often shaped like animals, deities, or festival symbols, created to bring good luck or protection.  This unusual folk-art bell is made from a large nutshell, perhaps - walnut or another tree nut - hand painted with the cartoonish face and attire of a classic Japanese warrior. The front features expressive brushwork and a simple crest motif on each of his shoulders, while the back has the inscription "Satsuma bell", identifying it as a regional souvenir from Kagoshima.
