Juniperus virginiana

A ubiquitous species of Illinois interstates and rest-stops, but also a suprising sucessful naturalizer and habitat builder. We may be a touch glib on that but that is usually how most people see this species. Its a shame. Juniperus virginiana has a lot to off … er for those looking for winter cover/forage for birds, soil stablization or even screening on poor soils. It is also one of those rarer evergreens that has a fall color (kinda), changing to a rusty orange green. There are a couple of drawbacks that need to be considered before planting this in your yard. First, it is a common vector to cedar-apple rust that can be damaging to apple and related species. Possibly very damaging, so please be sure of impact before planting. Second, it will seed into other areas, easily. Third, it is poky, very, very poky. Other than that we can’t recomend it enough, when we have it in stock.
