Horizontalis Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis Wiltoni)

Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltoni’ – Horizontalis Juniper is a low-growing evergreen shrub selected from a North American native species. Juniperus horizontalis is native to the northern United States and Canada, where it naturally grows in sandy soils, rocky outcrops, and open slopes. This cultivar retains the durability of the native species while offering a distinctive silvery-blue foliage color. Fine, scale-like needles form a dense, spreading mat that hugs the ground and creates uniform coverage. The foliage maintains its cool blue tones through the growing season and often deepens slightly in winter. Flowers are inconspicuous, and female plants may produce small berry-like cones typical of junipers. Growing with a prostrate, trailing habit, ‘Wiltoni’ is especially effective for erosion control, slopes, retaining walls, and rock gardens. It performs best in full sun and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance, making it a dependable evergreen groundcover.
