Church and State- Judge Magazine

This chromolithograph from The Judge magazine captures a charged moment in Gilded Age America, where fears about Chinese opium dens, police corruption, and Catholic influence collided on city streets. The satirical title "Church and State" carries a double edge: while ostensibly praising clerical intervention where police have failed (note the officers literally bound in red tape at left), the image also plays on Protestant anxieties about Catholic power in American civic life. The vivid scene unfolds outside a Chinatown opium den, complete with Chinese lanterns and characters on the signage. A priest in traditional cassock and cross forcibly removes a young woman in green, while another woman in red appears caught between a Chinese figure in yellow and the street. The bound policemen, rendered ineffectual, embody the cartoon's critique of municipal corruption. Meanwhile, Chinese faces peer from windows, portrayed in the caricatured style typical of the era's xenophobic imagery. A significant document of American social history, this print illuminates the complex web of prejudices that shaped public discourse in the years following the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. For collectors of political cartoons, immigration history, or Gilded Age ephemera, it offers both visual impact and substantial historical depth. Size: 9.75" x 12.75" Condition: Very Good
