Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard

Entry and Intermediate Backcountry Splitboard Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard The Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard is a forgiving directional splitboard for riders taking their freeride background into the backcountry for the first few seasons. A 298-252-293 mm shape at 156 cm runs a 7.6 m sidecut with 5 mm of taper, and the Freeride CamRock profile puts camber underfoot with an extended nose rocker, which is the combination that floats a nose in soft snow while still holding an edge on a firm skin track. At 3,100 g per board in a 156, on a dual-density paulownia and poplar core with a biax glass layup, the Frontier 2.0 is the most forgiving and least expensive split in the Jones line. Expert Review Ratings and sizing guidance verified against manufacturer specifications. Is This the Right Splitboard for You? Best For Riders moving from resort freeriding into touring who want a predictable, easy-turning board that floats well in powder and does not demand an aggressive stance to work. Consider Another Splitboard If You ski steep, technical lines at speed or weigh over 220 lbs. A mid-soft flex and 5 mm of taper give up composure at speed and tail sink in deep snow. Five millimetres of taper and a mid-soft flex make the Frontier 2.0 predictable rather than demanding, which matters more than outright power on the days a rider is still learning to read backcountry snow. Six sizes across three waist widths mean boot fit can be solved without changing board length: the 159 and 161W share a length band at 25.5 and 26.7 cm. A dual-density core at a 2:1 paulownia to poplar stringer ratio keeps the board damp for its weight, and the Sintered 8000 base holds wax well enough to stay quick on long, flat exits. Best Uses First seasons of splitboarding Powder days and tree riding Lower-angle terrain and exploratory tours Riders who want a forgiving board they can progress on Riders 120 to 220 lbs across the six sizes Splitboard Selection Advice The Frontier 2.0 size run is built around boot width as much as rider weight, and reading it as a simple ladder will put people on the wrong board. The 156, 159 and 162 run narrow at 25.2, 25.5 and 25.8 cm for boots up to a US 11. The 158W, 161W and 164W run 26.5, 26.7 and 26.9 cm and are specified for a US 11 boot. A rider at US 11.5 or larger should note the 26.3 cm minimum waist guidance, which all three wide sizes clear and none of the narrow ones do. Two setup details are worth knowing before mounting. The reference stance is 56.0 cm on the 156 and 58.0 cm on every size above it, with 2 cm of setback throughout, so a rider moving up from the 156 gains stance width rather than setback. Skins are sold separately and grouped rather than sized by length: the narrow 156, 159 and 162 take group B, and the wide 158W, 161W and 164W take group G, so a skin set carries across lengths within a width but not between widths. The Jones Howler Splitboard runs full tip-to-tail camber at a mid-stiff flex for steep, technical descents. The Frontier 2.0 runs a mid-soft flex with nose and tail rocker and costs less. A rider learning backcountry snow wants the Frontier 2.0; one already picking couloirs wants the Howler. Shop the Jones Howler Splitboard Frontier 2.0 vs. Weston Backwoods Splitboard Both are mid-priced freeride splits with a rockered nose, and they differ in taper. The Weston Backwoods Splitboard carries 18 mm against 5 mm here, which sinks its tail harder in deep snow and asks more of the rider in trees. The Frontier 2.0 is the more balanced and forgiving of the two on mixed snow. Shop the Weston Backwoods Splitboard Frontier 2.0 vs. Jones Men's Solution Splitboard The Jones Men's Solution Splitboard is the long-standing all-conditions board in the line, stiffer and more composed at speed across nine sizes. The Frontier 2.0 gives up that composure for a friendlier flex at a lower price. Riders who already know they will push hard should stretch to the Solution. Shop the Jones Men's Solution Splitboard Common Questions Who should buy the Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard? The Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard suits riders in their first seasons of splitboarding who want a forgiving, easy-turning board that floats in powder. A mid-soft flex with camber underfoot and an extended nose rocker at 3,100 g per board in a 156 makes the Frontier 2.0 predictable on lower-angle terrain and in trees, and it is the least expensive split Jones builds. What bindings and skins work with the Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard? The Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard takes splitboard-specific bindings that interface with splitboard hardware and transition between tour and ride mode. Standard solid-board snowboard bindings are not compatible. The board is sold on its own, so the binding interface and skins are separate purchases. Skins are grouped rather than sized by length: the 156, 159 and 162 take group B, and the 158W, 161W and 164W take group G. A notched tail accepts tail-clip skins. Confirm the puck pattern of your binding system against the board before mounting. Do the wide sizes just mean a bigger board? No, and the size chart rewards a careful read. The 158W and the 159 weigh the same 3,200 g and carry the same 140 to 190 lbs rider range, but the 158W is a full centimetre wider in the waist at 26.5 cm against 25.5 cm. The wide sizes solve boot overhang, not rider size. A rider at US 11.5 or above should also note the 26.3 cm minimum waist guidance, which only the wide sizes clear. Is the Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard enough board for an expert rider? For technical terrain at speed, usually not, and it is worth saying plainly rather than selling past it. Jones rates the Frontier 2.0 at 5 of 10 for flex and places it near the intermediate end of its own progression scale. Experts riding steep, firm lines will find the mid-soft flex and 5 mm of taper give up composure, and the Howler or the Solution is the better spend. On powder days and lower-angle terrain the Frontier 2.0 remains genuinely fun to ride at any level. How much does the Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard weigh? The Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard weighs 3,100 g per board at 156 cm, 3,200 g at 158W and 159 cm, 3,300 g at 161W and 162 cm, and 3,600 g at 164W. That is mid-pack for a splitboard and reflects a glass rather than carbon layup. Any weight quoted for the Frontier 2.0 without a size attached is incomplete. What are Karakoram Ultra Clips 1.0 and how do they differ from 2.0? The Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard uses Karakoram Ultra Clips 1.0, the earlier generation of the clip that joins the two halves at the seam. They are adjustable, so compression can be re-tensioned as the board ages. The 2.0 version found on the Howler is lighter, clamps tighter and has a smaller footprint, and the 1.0 clips are part of how the Frontier 2.0 reaches a lower price. Our Verdict The Jones Frontier 2.0 Splitboard is the right first splitboard for a rider with resort freeride miles who is learning the backcountry. A 298-252-293 mm directional shape with 5 mm of taper turns on a 7.6 m sidecut at 156 cm, and Freeride CamRock keeps camber underfoot for edge grip while an extended nose rocker handles the float. At 3,100 g per board in a 156 on a paulownia and poplar core with biax glass, the Frontier 2.0 is forgiving rather than powerful, and that is the point. Size it on boot width before rider weight, since the six sizes cover only three waist widths.
