Johnson's Blue Cranesbill Geranium

Johnson's Blue Cranesbill Geranium (Geranium x johnsonii 'Johnson's Blue')Johnson's Blue Cranesbill Geranium is a classic, long-blooming perennial that spreads into a full, flowering mound and quickly makes beds look finished. Its clear blue to lavender-blue blooms bring a cool, calming color that pairs easily with almost anything in the border. The foliage forms a dense, weed-suppressing layer that helps connect neighboring plants and soften edges. With sun to part shade and average care, it delivers reliable color and coverage year after year. Distinctive FeaturesThis hardy cranesbill forms a spreading clump of deeply cut green leaves topped with large, saucer-shaped blue flowers marked with darker veining. Bloom typically starts in late spring and continues into summer, with additional flowering likely when the plant is trimmed after the first flush. The habit is mounding to gently sprawling, making it especially useful as a flowering groundcover that still looks intentional. Foliage often stays attractive through the growing season and may show warm fall tones in cooler weather. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best flowering in sun and some afternoon shade helpful in hotter areas. Soil: Average, well-drained soil, and it tolerates many soil types as long as drainage is reasonable. Water: Medium moisture, watering during dry spells to keep flowering strong and foliage looking fresh. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 4 to 8. Drainage: Avoid persistently wet sites to reduce crown stress and maintain vigor. Airflow: Give plants room to breathe so foliage dries quickly and stays cleaner through summer. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant a broad drift near the front of a bed so the blue flowers read as a cool, season-long highlight at ground level. Groundcover: Use between shrubs and taller perennials to knit plantings together and help suppress weeds. Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a soft, flowering border that stays low and natural-looking. Cottage Borders: Pair with roses, catmint, salvias, and ornamental grasses for layered color and easy texture. Bulb Companion: Plant near spring bulbs so the foliage helps cover fading bulb leaves after bloom. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Cut back after the first main bloom to refresh foliage and encourage repeat flowering. Watering: Water during extended drought, because consistent moisture supports longer bloom and a fuller mound. Mulching: Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch off the crown for airflow. Feeding: Feed lightly in spring if needed, because overly rich soil can reduce flowering and loosen growth. Division: Divide every few years in spring or fall to rejuvenate vigor or manage spread. Why Choose Johnson's Blue Cranesbill Geranium? Reliable Blue Color: Blue to lavender-blue flowers deliver a classic look that is easy to design with. Long Bloom Season: Blooms from late spring into summer, with repeat flowering likely after a midseason trim. Border Coverage: Spreading habit fills gaps and creates a more cohesive, finished planting. Mature Size: Typically grows about 12 to 18 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches wide. Deer: Often considered deer and rabbit resistant, though browsing pressure can vary by location. If you want a low-maintenance perennial that delivers true blue color and helps borders look fuller, Johnson's Blue Cranesbill Geranium is a strong choice. Plant it in sun to part shade with well-drained soil, water during dry spells, and shear once after the first flush for the best repeat show. Over time it becomes a dependable, flower-filled layer that keeps the garden looking connected and complete.
