Jay Witcher Wire-Strung Sirr Harp

Jay Witcher's Sirr Harp is as much a work of sculptural art as it is a musical instrument, and the moment you take in the eagle-head carvings, the lion's paw feet, and the sweeping expanse of Celtic knotwork, it becomes clear that this is something rare and singular. Getting to play it is a privilege that connects you directly to a living tradition of early Irish wire-strung harp craft. Construction & Materials Originally built by master craftsman Jay Witcher as a faithful replica of the historic Sirr Harp, this floor-standing wire harp features 35 solid brass monofilament strings, unwound and chosen for their authenticity to early Irish and Scottish harping tradition. The deeply carved body showcases the extraordinary work of Bob Thomas, the artist responsible for the iconic Grateful Dead skull logo, whose intricate Celtic knotwork, interlocking ring patterns, and dual carved eagle heads transform every surface of the instrument into a gallery piece. The base terminates in carved lion's paw feet that root the instrument with quiet authority. Inlaid decorative studs line the harmonic curve, adding another layer of visual detail to this one-of-a-kind creation. Sound & Playability Solid brass monofilament wire strings are not wound, staying true to the tonal character of historical Irish wire harps. The tuning incorporates the traditional na comluighe, or sister strings, a historically documented feature of early Irish harps sometimes described as Adam and Eve strings, which adds a distinctive resonance and sympathetic vibration. Tuning and restoration guidance were provided by Ann Heymann, the foremost living authority on historical wire-strung harp technique, ensuring this instrument is voiced and set up to perform at the highest level of historical accuracy. About This Instrument The Sirr Harp, one of the great surviving historical Irish harps, served as the direct model for this instrument. Jay Witcher's replica is a serious scholarly and artistic achievement, drawing on the expertise of Ann Heymann and the carving talents of Bob Thomas to produce something that honors both the visual and acoustic heritage of the clairseach tradition. This is an instrument for the dedicated wire harp player, the collector, or anyone who wants to connect with the deep roots of Celtic music on a profound level. Every detail, from the depth of the carvings to the choice of stringing material, reflects an uncompromising commitment to authenticity. Care & Maintenance Wire-strung harps require specific tuning techniques and care practices that differ from nylon or gut-strung instruments. Tuning and maintenance guidance based on historical practice is available through the resources of Ann Heymann, whose work informed the setup of this instrument. Keep the harp away from extreme humidity fluctuations to protect the carved wooden body and maintain string stability. Periodic inspection of the brass strings and tuning pins will help ensure lasting playability. Consult a specialist with experience in wire-strung historical harps before making any adjustments to the setup.
