Java Fern | Microsorum Pteropus

Meet the Java Fern – A Hardy Classic for Any Aquarium Java Fern is one of the best plants for beginner aquarists, thanks to its resilience and adaptability. It has been a staple in aquariums for years, thriving in a variety of conditions with minimal care. With its long, textured green leaves, Java Fern creates a natural, jungle-like aesthetic in any tank. These leaves grow from a rhizome at the base of the plant, giving it a unique structure. You may even notice small orange or black dots forming on the leaves—these are part of its natural reproduction process, eventually developing into new baby plants. Planting & Care When adding Java Fern to your tank, it's important to avoid burying the rhizome, as this can cause rot. Instead, attach it to driftwood or rocks, or let it anchor naturally over time. Java Fern thrives in low-light conditions and does not require CO2 supplementation, making it a low-maintenance choice for aquarists of all experience levels. Its slow and steady growth makes it ideal for midground or background placement in a tank. If you have a nano tank, consider using potted Java Fern for a more compact setup. In larger tanks (10 gallons or more), mat-style Java Fern provides broader coverage and enhances the aquascape with lush greenery.
