Jan Iseli Red Enkianthus

Jan Iseli Red Enkianthus (Enkianthus campanulatus 'Jan Iseli Red')Jan Iseli Red Enkianthus is a refined, deciduous shrub that brings rich spring color and a strong fall finish to partially shaded gardens. In late spring, clusters of deep red, bell-shaped flowers hang along the branches and add a distinctive look that feels both classic and uncommon. Through summer it holds clean, green foliage, then shifts into intense red tones in fall for a second season of impact. It is a smart choice for mixed borders and woodland edges when you want an elegant shrub that rewards you twice a year. Distinctive FeaturesThis selection is prized for its rose-red to deep red, lantern-like flowers that nod in clusters in late spring to early summer, often showing darker veining for added depth. Leaves are arranged in a refined, whorled look along the stems and stay a fresh green through the growing season. Fall color can be a standout, often turning strong shades of red and burgundy. The habit is upright and well-branched, creating a composed silhouette that fits easily into acid-loving shrub plantings. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best performance in morning sun and afternoon shade in hotter settings. Soil: Acidic, moist, organically rich, well-drained soil, and avoid sites that dry out hard in summer. Water: Medium, keep evenly moist during establishment and water during dry spells to prevent stress. USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 5 to 8. Mature Size: Typically 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a spring-flowering feature where the red bells can be seen up close along a path or patio edge. Woodland Edge: Plant at the edge of trees for a natural look that still feels polished and intentional. Acid-Loving Borders: Combine with rhododendrons, azaleas, and other acid lovers for a cohesive, layered planting. Mixed Shrub Borders: Use as a mid-border anchor that adds spring bloom and strong fall color without overwhelming the bed. Foundation Planting: Place in lightly shaded foundations where a refined, upright shrub helps soften architecture. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Prune lightly right after flowering to shape, and avoid heavy late pruning that can reduce next season's blooms. Watering: Maintain consistent moisture in summer, especially in the first few seasons and during heat waves. Mulching: Mulch with pine bark or other organic mulch to conserve moisture and support acidic soil conditions. Soil Care: Keep soil acidic and rich with periodic top-dressing of compost and organic matter. Site Selection: Protect from hot, drying wind and harsh afternoon sun to keep foliage and buds in better condition. Why Choose Jan Iseli Red Enkianthus?
