This 1986 silkscreen poster by Swiss designer Niklaus Troxler was created for a live performance by the James Newton Quartet featuring Andrew Cyrille in Willisau, Switzerland. Known for his ability to translate sound into shape and color, Troxler’s work became a visual signature of the European jazz scene. A lifelong jazz enthusiast, he founded the Willisau Jazz Festival in 1975 and designed posters for nearly every concert and event that passed through the town, turning them into collectable works of art. His playful minimalism and vibrant color choices reflect both his love for improvisation and the free spirit of jazz itself. The James Newton Quartet, led by flutist and composer James Newton, was a defining force in the 1980s avant-garde jazz movement. Newton was celebrated for his ability to blend the spiritual depth of classical composition with the emotional immediacy of improvisation. Drummer Andrew Cyrille, a pioneer of free jazz and longtime collaborator with Cecil Taylor, brought explosive rhythm and texture to the ensemble, creating music that felt both grounded and ethereal. The poster’s relaxed energy perfectly mirrors the group’s sound. With the flutist in a pink dove-patterned shirt and a wide yellow hat, Troxler captured the lightness, warmth, and creative freedom that defined both the musicians and the era they played in.
