Jade Pea God

Kenny Scharf - Jade Pea God  Kenny Scharf's “Jade Pea God” (1989) is a silkscreen print on paper, measuring 78.7×93.9 cm, is a Unique, Trial Proof, i.e. an experimental preliminary proof before the final version. The work perfectly embodies the artist's pop surrealist aesthetic, characterised by a bold use of colour, playful elements and a strong influence of pop culture and cartoons. The composition is dominated by a serpentine blue creature, built through a sequence of spheres that narrow towards the tail. Its expressive face, with a broad smile and curved moustache, gives it a playful and caricatured appearance typical of Scharf's imagery. The creature's body extends into an abstract space, suggesting a sense of fluid and dynamic movement. The background is composed of horizontal bands shaded in shades of purple, pink and white, creating an effect of depth and chromatic vibration. This colour choice amplifies the dreamlike and psychedelic atmosphere of the work. The image is framed by an orange border decorated with small white rectangles, a graphic element reminiscent of the perforation of film, suggesting a connection with the world of animation and cinema. “Jade Pea God” perfectly represents Scharf's visual language, in which the boundary between reality and fantasy dissolves, giving rise to parallel universes populated by fantastic beings. The work conveys a playful and vibrant energy, inviting the viewer to plunge into a visual world where art and pop culture merge in an explosion of colours and shapes.
