NATIVE HAWAIIAN DESIGN This design honors the ʻIwa (Frigate bird). The ‘Iwa is a master of the skies in Hawaiʻi and is frequently seen soaring across the ocean or against the steep pali (cliffs) searching for food. There are several ʻōlelo noʻeau (Hawaiian proverbs) that compare the Frigate bird’s graceful gliding to that of a handsome person.  The ʻIwa is also an ʻaumakua (Hawaiian ancestral guardian) to various family lines across Hawaiʻi. ʻAumakua would form symbiotic relationships with family members living in the present. As deified ancestors, they would protect and advise their descendants so that they may live better lives. In return, the descendants would form a bond and mālama (care) for their ancestors’ animal manifestation.
