Cold hardy and adaptable, Hosta isn't particular on soil type, any well-drained medium that is highly organic works for these easy plants. Best in moist soil that does not dry out for long, mulch the roots well to keep them cool, moist, and insulated. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Low maintenance, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues! Divide your perennials every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.
