The Irish are revered for their lyrical turn of phrase, whether in Gaelic or English. The tradition of Irish Blessings, most of which are of anonymous origin, is one strand of that literary heritage. This blessing, like many Irish blessings, can be traced to “St. Patrick’s Breastplate,” an Irish hymn attributed to St. Patrick which was translated into English in the late 19th century.
