Voile Hyper V6 BC Touring Ski

99 mm Ultralight Scaled-Base Touring Ski Voile Hyper V6 BC Touring Ski Skiers who want to cross rolling country without stopping to skin, and who still care what the ski does on the way down, are the case for the Voile Hyper V6 BC Touring Ski. A 131-99-111 mm shape at 178 cm on an 18.5 m radius keeps the surfy V6 turn, and the molded Traction Pattern base holds on moderate ground with nothing on the bases. At 1,340 g per ski in a 178 the Voile Hyper V6 BC is the lightest scaled ski Voile builds in this width, which is what makes the scales worth carrying rather than a compromise. Expert Review Specifications verified against the manufacturer catalog for this model year. Ratings are our reading of the specs and are pending staff on-snow review. Is This the Right Ski for You? Best For Tourers who want scale-base climbing without the weight of the poplar build, on hut trips, rolling approaches and low-angle tree terrain in the 95 to 100 mm range. Consider Another Ski If You skin every climb, want the free glide of a smooth base, or plan to mount telemark bindings, which void the Voile factory warranty on Hyper Series skis. The Traction Pattern base grips when the ski is flexed flat and glides on the forward stride, so rolling terrain becomes one continuous push rather than a sequence of transitions. Shape and radius are untouched from the Hyper V6, so the descent is the same short-running-length, early-release turn with drag added. Hardened steel edges wrap the full perimeter and the mounting areas are reinforced, which is worth having on a ski this light when the approach is rocky. Best Uses Rolling approach terrain and long traverses Hut trips where transitions cost more than glide Low-angle tree laps and trail-system touring Skiers running pin/tech touring bindings Long days where skin transitions add up Ski Specialist's Advice Scales handle the moderate half of a day and hand the rest back to skins. Grip falls off on cold dry snow and on refrozen surfaces, so carry skins for anything steep or firm. On length, Voile moves the sidecut with the size, so a 163 is 126-96-108 mm on a 17 m radius at 1,150 g per ski and a 183 is 133-100-113 mm on a 19 m radius at 1,415 g per ski. The BC run stops at 183 cm. Voile builds the Hyper Series for AT bindings, and mounting telemark bindings or quiver killers on the Voile Hyper V6 BC voids the Voile factory warranty. Telemark skiers should buy the standard Voile V6 BC, which Voile rates for their bindings. Voile marks boot center and publishes a chart per length, so a standard mount needs no plate. Size brakes to the waist at your length, 96 mm at 163 cm to 100 mm at 183 cm, and cut skins from a 120 mm stock width. Length and mount guidance built from the manufacturer size run. Compare the Voile Hyper V6 BC Voile Hyper V6 BC vs. Voile Hyper V6 Same shape, same paulownia core and doubled carbon layup, and published weights within hand-build variance of each other at 178 cm. The scale base is the decision. The Voile Hyper V6 BC climbs rolling ground without skins, and the Voile Hyper V6 glides faster on flats and low-angle descents. Shop Voile Hyper V6 skis Voile Hyper V6 BC vs. Voile V6 BC Both carry the Traction Pattern base on the identical 131-99-111 mm shape. The Voile Hyper V6 BC weighs 1,340 g per ski at 178 cm against 1,530 g for the poplar-core Voile V6 BC. The V6 BC is damper and is the one Voile rates for telemark bindings. Shop Voile V6 BC skis Voile Hyper V6 BC vs. Voile HyperVector Both use the Hyper Series paulownia core and doubled carbon. The Voile HyperVector is the smooth-based carving ski, 94 mm underfoot at 171 cm on a 19.5 m radius with a long running length and a flat tail. The Voile Hyper V6 BC trades edge hold for tip and tail rocker and a scale base. Shop Voile HyperVector skis Common Questions Who should buy the Voile Hyper V6 BC? The Voile Hyper V6 BC suits tourers whose days involve a lot of rolling, moderate-angle travel and who do not want to pay for that convenience in weight. At 1,340 g per ski at 178 cm with a 131-99-111 mm shape, it climbs undulating ground without skins and still skis the descent like a Hyper V6. Is the Voile Hyper V6 BC heavier than the Hyper V6? Not meaningfully, and the published numbers make that clear. At 178 cm Voile lists 1,340 g per ski for the Voile Hyper V6 BC against 1,320 g for the Hyper V6, and at 173 cm the BC is actually the lower figure at 1,265 g against 1,275 g. Differences that small are hand-build variance on skis Voile makes by hand, not a real weight penalty for the scale base. How steep can the Voile Hyper V6 BC climb without skins? Less steep than a skin track, and the answer moves with the snow. The Traction Pattern base holds best when there is moisture in the snow and loses grip on cold dry powder and refrozen crust. Use the scales for rolling and moderate ground, and carry skins for sustained or steep climbing. What bindings work with the Voile Hyper V6 BC? The Voile Hyper V6 BC is built for AT bindings, including pin/tech touring bindings, and takes a standard mount without a reinforcing plate. Mounting telemark bindings or quiver killers on a Hyper Series ski voids the Voile factory warranty, so tele skiers should buy the standard Voile V6 BC. Match binding to your boot sole norm and size any brakes to the waist, 96 mm at 163 cm up to 100 mm at 183 cm. What length Voile Hyper V6 BC should I ski? The Voile Hyper V6 BC comes in 163, 173, 178 and 183 cm, with no 188 in the scaled run. Most tourers land between 173 and 178. Voile changes the shape with the length, so a 163 runs 96 mm underfoot on a 17 m radius while a 183 runs 100 mm on a 19 m radius. Can you put skins on the Voile Hyper V6 BC? Yes, and most owners carry them for the steep part of the day. Skins adhere to the scaled base without trouble. Cut them from a 120 mm stock width to cover the 108 to 113 mm tail across the run, sizing to the tail rather than to the 99 mm waist. What does the scale base cost on the descent? Glide, noise and the ability to ski backwards. The drag is obvious on flats and low-angle runouts, less so once the pitch steepens or the snow softens, and the scales chatter audibly on hard snow. Those are the standing trade-offs of any scaled base rather than something particular to this ski. Our Verdict The Voile Hyper V6 BC Touring Ski is the scaled ski to buy when the convenience is worth having but the weight is not. The molded Traction Pattern base climbs rolling terrain with nothing on the bases, the 131-99-111 mm shape at 178 cm and 18.5 m radius keep the descent short-radius and easy to release, and a paulownia core under two Voile Carbon-Weave layers holds it to 1,340 g per ski. That is 190 g per ski under the poplar V6 BC and within build variance of the smooth-based Hyper V6, so the scales are close to free in grams. Telemark skiers need the standard V6 BC instead.
