Hydroxyethyl Cellulose

Engineering the Ultimate Medium: Premium Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) Fine Powder Take control of your studio formulations with our premium Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC). Highly prized by material scientists and master ceramicists alike, this non-ionic, water-soluble polymer is the ultimate binder for creating professional-grade clay bodies from scratch. If you are mixing custom silver or base metal clays, formulating delicate cold porcelain, or refining high-performance paper clay, HEC provides the molecular architecture needed for pristine workability and structural success. Why Advanced Makers Choose HEC Binder Artisan clay crafters face unique problems: "short" or brittle clays that tear when rolled, slip that separates in the jar, and pieces that warp or crack as they dry. HEC corrects these common studio pain points by radically altering the rheology (flow and deformation) of your wet medium. High-Viscosity Plasticity: Transforms stubborn, low-plasticity mineral dust into a buttery, highly responsive clay body. Roll out thin sheets and bend intricate shapes without tearing or fraying at the edges. Exceptional Water Retention: HEC is highly effective at slowing down and evening out water evaporation. This grants you a drastically extended working window and prevents the uneven shrinkage that causes drying cracks. Flawless Crystal-Clear Dissolve: Unlike crude binders that can leave behind a murky residue, our high-purity HEC dissolves completely transparent. Your vibrant colors, delicate porcelain whites, and brilliant metal clay lusters remain unblemished. Superior Slip Suspension: Excellent for liquid clay slips or glazes. It keeps heavy mineral particles suspended uniformly in water, preventing them from settling into a rock-hard layer at the bottom of your storage containers. Versatile Studio Applications A tiny amount completely upgrades the physical properties of multiple artisan compounds: Custom Metal Clay Bodies: Ensures fine silver, copper, or bronze powders bind perfectly into a smooth, malleable, torch-firing or kiln-firing paste. Artisan Air-Dry Clays & Cold Porcelain: Replicates the ultra-smooth feel, high-flexibility profile, and edge-retention of premium commercial brands. Paper Clay Reinforcement: Acts as a seamless bridging agent that locks cellulose fibers and mineral fillers together into an ultra-tough, lightweight sculpting matrix. Product Specifications Sourced for industry-leading purity and packaged to withstand the studio environment: Feature Product Details Chemical Name 100% Pure Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) Texture Superfine, fast-dispersing white powder Sizes Available 50g (Ideal for individual experimentation) | 100g (Studio Bulk Value Pack) Properties Non-toxic, odorless, pH-neutral, and bio-resistant (resists spoiling) Packaging Heavy-duty, resealable, moisture-proof barrier pouch Studio Mixing Recommendations For a Lump-Free Clay Blend: Because HEC hydrates rapidly when exposed to moisture, tossing it directly into standing water can cause stubborn clumps. For a flawless mix, thoroughly dry-blend the HEC powder directly into your dry clay minerals or metal powders first before introducing any liquids. Proportional Guide: Start by adding 1% to 2% HEC by total dry weight of your mixture. Adjust the percentage incrementally to fine-tune the exact slip, stretch, and spring of your custom formulation. Eliminate Brittle Clay. Master Your Formulations. Stop letting unyielding, fragile materials limit your artistic vision. Elevate your custom studio recipes with the commercial-grade binding strength and silky elasticity required to bring your most intricate concepts to life.
