Husbands John Cassavetes (Poolside Portrait Reprint/Peter Falk/Ben Gazzara)

HUSBANDS — Poolside Portrait Reprint (John Cassavetes, 1970) Released in 1970, Husbands is one of John Cassavetes’ rawest and most uncomfortable studies of masculinity, friendship, grief, and emotional collapse. Following the sudden death of a close friend, three middle-aged men (played by Ben Gazzara, Peter Falk, and Cassavetes himself) spiral into a haze of drinking, bravado, cruelty, tenderness, and arrested adolescence — masculinity unraveling in real time. This reprint poster features the iconic poolside image of the four husbands together — a moment of forced leisure and exposed vulnerability. Half vacation snapshot, half psychological standoff, the image captures everything Cassavetes was after: men performing ease while barely holding themselves together, bodies relaxed, emotions anything but.
