The lowered edge reduced excess weight while increasing usable cutting surface. This allowed craftsmen and warriors to grip closer to the blade for carving, shaping timber, and detailed camp work. Long-haft forest axes later became essential tools for clearing land and preparing shelter materials. The extended handle delivered leverage for deeper cuts while maintaining directional control. Pattern-welded steel techniques trace back centuries and remain valued for layered strength and distinctive grain structure. Field Performance This axe handles chopping, limb removal, and light splitting. The longer haft improves swing power for trail clearing and camp preparation. The wide crescent edge reduces binding in green wood and supports cleaner cuts. Explore Related Axes For a compact camping hatchet suited for lighter carry, view the Nordic Camp Hatchet.
