Holy Bible ca. 1919

5W Pocket Size Holy Bible. London; ca. 1919. Notes The Holy Bible is the sacred scripture of Christianity, divided into two main parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament, shared with Judaism, contains books of law, history, poetry, and prophecy written before the life of Jesus Christ, while the New Testament focuses on His life, teachings, and the early Christian Church. Comprising 66 books in most Protestant versions (more in Catholic and Orthodox canons), the Bible was written over centuries by multiple authors in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. It is considered by believers to be divinely inspired and serves as the central guide for faith, morality, and spiritual life in Christianity. This Bible was inscribed in 1919, just one year after the end of World War I—a global conflict that reshaped nations, societies, and the human spirit. The world was emerging from the shadows of unprecedented devastation, mourning millions of lives lost while cautiously stepping into a new era of hope and rebuilding. It was a time of profound transition: empires had fallen, new nations were forming, and people everywhere were grappling with questions of purpose, peace, and faith. In that moment of reflection and uncertainty, a Bible would have stood as a symbol of comfort, resilience, and spiritual grounding for a generation seeking meaning in the aftermath of war.
