Hollywood Juniper Tree

A Star Among Evergreens All evergreen trees are not created equal, especially Hollywood Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka'). Its unusual form is an immediate attention-grabber, because of the twisting, upward-spiraling branches. A popular evergreen tree in California (hence its common name "Hollywood"), this low-maintenance juniper grows across a broad perennial range in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 through 9. It's a tough tree for tough sites, although it excels in not-so-tough spots, too! Superior Tolerances Few plants can claim the tolerant attributes of Hollywood Juniper. Where other plants struggle, this tree prospers -- winning rave reviews for these characteristics: • Drought-tolerant • Heat-tolerant • Wind-tolerant • Salt spray-tolerant • Deer-tolerant Tip: Although newly planted trees need regular watering, once they're established in their new home, they're drought-tolerant. A Coastal Gem Because of its tolerance to salt spray, Hollywood Juniper is a perfect choice for coastal gardens. You can even plant a row of these trees to form an evergreen screen to take the onslaught of salt spray and keep it off your other garden plants! Each tree in the screen will take on a unique appearance because of the twists and turns of its branches. Birds Love This Tree From a birds'-eye view, what's not to love? The evergreen branches offer protection from summer heat and winter cold; the needle-like leaves make perfect nesting spots; and the tree's blue berries are a food source! No Wet Feet Hollywood Juniper trees tolerate most soil types, but they aren't fond of "wet feet" -- roots that stay in waterlogged soil. So keep your tree high and dry, in well-draining soil, and it'll ask little else of you!
