Both models share the exact same exterior measurements, 535 lb frame, 1-hour fire rating (1850°F / 125°F interior), and water resistance. The primary difference is the lock mechanism: HDS-1000C (This Model): Features a mechanical S&G Group II Combination Dial Lock, preferred by users who want long-term mechanical reliability without relying on electronic keypads or batteries. HDS-1000E: Features an S&G UL Listed Type 1 Electronic Lock, ideal for fast keypad access and multi-user environment code changes. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Q: What digital media can be stored in the HDS-1000C Data Safe? A: The HDS-1000C is designed to protect external hard drives (HDDs & SSDs), USB flash drives, LTO/magnetic backup tapes, memory cards, CDs/DVDs, and critical paper files. Standard safes permit internal heat up to 350°F, which destroys digital media; the HDS-1000C keeps internal temperatures below 125°F to ensure data survival. Q: Does the S&G Group II dial lock require batteries? A: No. The Sargent & Greenleaf Group II mechanical combination lock is completely analog and mechanical. It operates without batteries, wiring, or electrical components. Q: Why is there no center bolt-down hole on the HDS-1000C? A: Omitting floor mounting holes prevents fire, heat, and water from penetrating through the bottom of the safe during a fire emergency. At 535 lbs, the safe offers strong natural protection against physical theft. Q: Is the interior shelf setup customizable? A: Yes, the safe includes two removable shelves, allowing you to reconfigure the internal layout to store taller drive arrays, tape storage containers, or binder boxes. Q: Will this safe protect my media from water damage if fire sprinklers activate? A: Yes. The HDS-1000C features protective door seals that guard the interior chamber against water from fire sprinklers, hoses, and elevated ambient humidity levels.
