Hokema - Twin Kalimba

Hokema Twin Kalimba – One Instrument, Two Players, Infinite Connection Two 9-note kalimbas mounted together onto one 30cm (12") block Two identically tuned sets of tines — can be played by one or two persons simultaneously The resonance of the tones is picked up by the wooden body and felt physically by both players Tuned to A-minor — harmonious and intuitive, no wrong notes Advanced players can explore a wider range of scales by retuning individual tines Therapists are especially enjoying having a Twin Kalimba in their practice. Inviting clients, or parents and kids, into a "musical conversation" is a creative way to break the ice. While the sound builds active listening, the resonant block creates a physical connection between players. This non-threatening musical dialogue can bring more creativity and openness into any session. Playing Solo Hold the Twin in both hands so that each thumb can reach one set of tines. You can now play all nine tones on both sides of the instrument, creating a full, rich sound with natural overtones — thanks to the identical tuning on both sides. When one tine is plucked, it resonates with its twin on the other side, producing a beautifully layered tone. For the advanced kalimba player, the Twin also offers the potential of a wider range of scales by simply retuning individual tines. Playing Duo The driving motive for designing the Twin was a desire to create an instrument that offers a shared experience of sound — between therapist and patient, couples, family members, and friends. As the wooden body resonates, it is physically felt by both partners. The identical tuning of the two sets of tines guarantees harmonious tone sequences and sounds. Tones on the two sides can also be tuned to differ slightly while still harmonizing — opening up even more musical possibilities between players. What Customers Are Saying “A tool for bringing hearts and minds together in a fun and relaxed way. I’ve used it in the office to bring our staff into harmony before meetings. Two people, facing each other, each hold a side of the kalimba. One person plays a single note. The other answers with a single note. Expand to two notes each, listening and interacting without playing simultaneously. Then one person plays a simple, continuous rhythmic pattern while the other plays in response — all done without pauses or discussion, just sink into the experience.” — M.
